Fascist leaders often start by attacking the court system. In a healthy democracy, independent courts make sure leaders follow the law and protect people’s rights. Fascists try to weaken this protection by calling judges unfair, corrupt, or enemies of the people. They say the courts are getting in the way of progress or “the will of the people.”
After trust is damaged, fascist leaders change the courts to work in their favor. They choose judges who will support them, change how judges are picked, or add more judges to tip the balance. Over time, the courts stop acting as a check on power and instead help the leader gain more control.
Attacking the Legislative Branch
Fascist leaders see the legislative branch—like Congress or Parliament—as a threat because it brings together diverse voices and can limit their power. To weaken it, they say lawmakers, especially those in other parties, are corrupt, lazy, or don’t care about the country. They blame political disagreements for slowing down progress and use that as an excuse to take more control and avoid debate. Sometimes, they even try to change the constitution to give the legislature less power.
Once people believe the legislature is the problem, fascist leaders take steps to shut it down. They might stop it from meeting or order decisions without a vote by claiming there is an emergency.
Undermining a Free Press
Fascist leaders try to control the media by making people not trust it. They call independent news outlets “fake news” or “traitors” to make them look dishonest or dangerous. At the same time, they push out their own messages through media they control or that supports them.
By shutting down voices that disagree, blocking information, and spreading lies, they make it hard for people to know what’s really going on. Without independent news, citizens can’t make smart choices or hold leaders accountable.
Manipulating Elections
Fascist leaders try to make elections look fair while changing the rules. They pass laws that help their party win, make it harder for some people to vote, and redraw voting areas to hurt their opponents. They may use fear to stop people from voting or block other candidates from running. They often say these changes are needed to stop election fraud or to protect the country.
When things don’t go their way, fascist leaders claim the election was rigged and refuse to accept the results. Over time, the elections become just a show to make it seem like the leader is still following the rules, even when they’re not.
Co-opting Security Forces and Bureaucracy
Fascist leaders often take control of the police, military, and intelligence agencies. They replace top leaders with people who are loyal to them and then use these forces to scare or silence anyone who speaks out. Instead of protecting the public, these groups are used to watch critics, break up protests, and stop opposition.
Fascist leaders go after government workers who are supposed to be neutral. They fire people who don’t fully support them and give important jobs to their followers. This helps them control government operations.
Why This Matters Today
It’s important today for people to understand how fascist leaders break down democracy—because it usually doesn’t start with violence. Instead, they slowly weaken the system from the inside. If citizens don’t see these warning signs early, it becomes easier for these leaders to take full control.
